“Nothing reveals humanity so well as the games it plays.”

~David Hartley (as quoted by Q; “Hide and Q”, Star Trek: TNG)

About the DM:

The greatest thrill as both a player and a creator is imagining and inhabiting living worlds. Engaging in social and tactical situations can teach us a lot about ourselves (and our friends), and experimenting with choices and consequences in a simulated environment can sometimes provide great insight. What has always impressed me most about Dungeons & Dragons is how it can fill any niche, scratch any itch, and generally offer something for just about every type of player imaginable. In the years that I have been playing and running 5th Edition D&D I have had the pleasure and the privilege of joining players with a wide range of experience, of many different ages and backgrounds, to create and participate in a truly unique and memorable form of entertainment.

Typically, I prefer to run a high-fantasy, high-magic setting based in the Forgotten Realms, with generous allowances made for homebrewed content. However, using a modified version of the 5th Ed. D&D ruleset, I am open to alternate settings including: sci-fi, steampunk, wild west, post-apocalyptic survival, or whatever type of world you and your group would like to inhabit.

If you and a group of your friends are interested in playing 5th Edition Dungeons & Dragons, I would like to offer my expertise and availability as a DM for hire for a flat, per-session fee. This offer is made primarily to groups, but if you are interested in single-player (or “heads-up” style) D&D, or would like to play but do not have an existing group please feel free to contact me and we can work out an appropriate arrangement.

Thank you for your interest,

~DMDV

DM Services: About

Games Available

I am available to run games on a weekly, biweekly, monthly, or ad hoc basis. Sessions will run no fewer than three hours, and rarely go longer than four (one-shot adventures may sometimes go longer). Each session will be facilitated using the Roll20 Virtual Tabletop - players will be required to create a free account at Roll20.net to participate. Remote connection for video and voice can be established using Google Hangouts or a dedicated Discord channel. There are several options available, depending on your group’s level of experience, interest, and availability. It is my aim to accommodate as many types of players as possible. See our Adventures page for comprehensive list of available adventures.
Some types of games are:

One-Shot Adventures

Newer or less experienced players will have the option of using pre-generated characters to play through a self-contained adventure, with the expectation of resolving the action in one session. These adventures are typically fast-paced and make for good pick up games and are designed to focus on fundamental gameplay mechanics.

Short Takes

Medium length adventures designed to be completed over the course of 2-4 play sessions. Players will face more difficult challenges and typically progress 1-2 levels.

The Hero’s Journey

A long form campaign or anthology of episodic, sandbox-style sessions designed to progress the players to higher levels.

Custom Campaigns

Tailored to the interests of your group. In addition to game play, these sessions will focus heavily on collaborative world building and character development. In these campaigns, players will have a larger role in shaping the story and the world’s events.

What I Provide

Most importantly, I offer an inclusive environment where players can feel comfortable to create, explore, express, communicate, and enjoy themselves. Though I do often run pre-written modules, I do not take a cookie-cutter approach to game design. The choices made by each group will directly (and may drastically) affect the events to come.

  • Dynamic in-game lighting and scene-specific soundtracks to create an engaging and immersive experience.

  • Custom Player Tokens for each Player Character.

  • Custom, campaign-specific handouts for each group to simulate the tactile experience of a live tabletop game.

  • Custom and curated battle maps for tactical combat simulation.

  • A free “Session Zero”, wherein players will have an opportunity to build a character and discuss any campaign or scenario-specific expectations or desires.

  • In Addition to The Game, I will be available between sessions to answer player questions, provide support, and engage in game discussion via email, Direct Message, or through a dedicated, campaign/group-specific Discord channel on the Dungeon General server, endeavouring to reply in a timely manner.

Payment Structure

All transactions will occur directly between the DM and The Group using an agreed upon secure source (PayPal, Venmo, etc.). Payment will be made on a per-session basis and must be received in full in advance of the scheduled start of that session. If one or more players are absent, The Group is still responsible for full payment for the session, but a full cancellation by all members of The Group will not be cause for expected payment for that session. Both the DM and The Group reserve the right to terminate this arrangement at any time. This is not a contract.
